House of Marlo |
At its heart, the first half of the book is a moving love story about the matriarch and patriarch of two ancient and powerful dynasties. In their youth they are united in marriage, but then spend the next twenty years pushed or pulled in separate directions either by her indifference, by the divergent roles they each must play in life, or simply by the strong tides of the times. Then at mid life, they rediscover one another. A courtship of epic proportion has its beginning. But as her love for him is rekindled by a discovery, and his love for her finds a foothold in her indifference, their world together undergoes upheaval and great historic change. By the time our story opens, their time together may already be drawing to an end. Their world is at war and they both have important parts to play in the outcome. The story embodies the ideals and historic traditions of a noble people, dignified and Homeric in their thoughts and actions, defending those traditions and values against the onslaught of a rising tide of oppression. The story is articulated with a grand design, centered on the adventures and achievements of these two central characters in love. The antagonist behind the upheaval that changes Eve and Aaron’s world and brings an untimely end to their love story is Aaron’s uncle, a man known as Draco. This first book in the series marks the passing of an age and creates an entire secondary world as the basis for the entire series. |
